Stress reduction in early pregnancy
Regular treatment with acupuncture can help to reduce anxiety and stress levels during early pregnancy. According to an article published in the New Scientist in 2004, stress has been shown to increase the risk of miscarriage.
Morning Sickness
Morning sickness can be debilitating and exhausting - knowing that it will (eventually!) stop by itself is not much comfort when you can barely move. Acupuncture is a gentle and effective way of treating this condition.
The Evidence - acupuncture is "an effective treatment for women who experience nausea and dry retching in early pregnancy" (Smith, Crowther & Beilby, 2002).
Did you know - seabands, which are widely available for the treatment of morning sickness and travel sickness, apply pressure to an acupuncture point often used to treat symptoms of nausea.
Depression during pregnancy
A study published in March 2010 reported that up to 14% of women may suffer from depression during pregnancy, and many of these women are reluctant to take anti-depressants for fear of harming their unborn baby. Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine concluded that acupuncture may be a useful alternative as it reduces "depressive symptoms better than other non-pharmacological techniques" (Manber et al., 2010).
